Thanks. This is actually one of the first hits we found as well when we started searching. The free tool could not help us because it only handles RAID5 with one disk missing (I still cannot believe we lost two at the same time). All the experts told us not to fiddle around too much or we might cause a lot of damage.
We opted for a $1350 "flat rate with no diagnostic fee" solution. They have had the stuff for a couple of weeks and already told us all files could be recovered.

Glad to hear it.
There are several methods to recover data from a disk depending on what is actually wrong with it.
From what I understand from some of my research from wanting to get into Deep data recovery.
They some times only have one shot to get the data off a bad disk and save it as a disk image.
And the Equiptemnt Was way out of my budget, even for the cheap stuff.
But Some companys even though they recover everything only give you the data back that you asked for.
And what they agreed to charge you for.

Good to know.
We asked them if they would be able to recover the whole thing, meaning the bootable OS and all. They said they normally would not do that because they are not able to verify that it is actually working, but they would make an exception. We are still waiting to get it back though.
Just between the two of us ( ), it was our domain server and we have had numerous issues running without it. We did set up a new one and started migrating desktop systems to it, but some of the file servers have complex user and group privileges on the shares.
I will not go into the reasons why we do not have a working backup of the domain server.

If you only had one disk missing, then you would not have noticed any drama accessing your data, though you would have received notice from the RAID that one of your disks was dead.
RAID 5 allows for one disk to die and not affect the RAID. RAID 5 allows for the redundancy of 1 disk with parity spread around. When 2 disk go, you'are sh*t out of luck.

Right. If one drive is dead, but the RAID is undamaged, it is just a matter of replacing the drive. The free tool can be used for repairing a damaged or failed (not sure what the correct term is) RAID5 with zero or one missing/dead drive.
In any case, since we were in the "out of luck" situation, we left it up to experts to fix it for us.

Tested on 3 different Windows 2008 R2 servers. After and automated update RDP breaks. Be careful if you are colocating things.....
The updates we had issue with are these. I am not sure what one triggered the issue for us but I believe it is one of these...

I did a windows Update and then my Vista Partition started crashing on boot.
Had to do a system restore after running the Startup troubleshooter.
The log said it was a Patch, but didn't tell me which one.
Go figure.

When you first look around and want to ask a question it is not real clear on where to ask it.
I would like to see a section where you ask questions like on The Code project rather than a forum format like the general SysAdmin discussions section.
Things tend to blur together there.

Just for you.

Hi. I just purchased a VPS server and need to install a webserver and a VPN server to start with.
Server is running Linux Ubuntu.
Do you have any recommendation on software needed and how to configure the server to have a stable environment(Secure, robust, reliable)?
Any tutorials or related threads would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Well if you need a webserver and its not installed use apachee. Are you using any PHP or MySQL?
Chances are you will need a LAMP server...
The basics to install it is to drop to the command line and typ the following two commands
sudo apt-get install tasksel
and then
sudo tasksel install lamp-server
This will get you up and running. If you already have some of these installed you may have issues with those above commands.
As for VPN, there are a number of ways to do this. do you need to use VPN or can you just use SSH? SSH is considered secure and will let you do everything you need to do from command line. Everything in linux can be done via command line.
to install ssh
sudo apt-get install openssh-server
Then to connect to your SSH server with on your windows machine you can install and download putty from here.... Use the EXE download, no install just download it and run it.

Lamp server sounds good. Will try and see if the components are not already installed.
As for ssh, it is already installed. I want vpn to enable anonymous surfing.

We you looking for a web based VPN solution, so someone hits an https page then they get presented with a login and password and it opens up a port based VPN session? or are you looking for a full blown VPN into your network with like IPSEC or PPTP type thing?
|
|
|
|
|
No web based vpn just a straight forward open vpn connection from my home computer to the server. The webserver has nothing to do with the vpn. At the moment I just want to connect from home to the internet via the vpn.

This should get you in the right direction... firgure out what one suits your needs and go from there. PPTP is least secure as far as most people are concerned but it is the most versitile. Iphone, Macs, Windows, Blackberries etc...

Hi Guys,
Is it a good thing to restart application servers and data base servers periodically.. once for a 6 month like wise???
|
|
|
|
|
If they are windows servers you will want to patch them periodically with updates so yes rebooting is important. If they are Linux servers... well I only reboot them when they need it.
|
|
|
|
|
Thanx for the update. But my concern is not about the servers. My concern is about the application performance. is there any affect to the application performance when we do restart the servers??
|
|
|
|
|
It really depends on the application. Some applications rely heavily on caching. Some that do will possibly see a negative affect for some period of time after a restart. Some however may see a boost in performance if there is no garbage collection or cache purging to remove stale items.
There are few applications that I have ever had to managed that required any sort of restarting in order to stay running properly. If it needs to be restarted then something is wrong with it.

Time will tell I guess but after giving Windows 8 and Windows 8 Server a full shakedown for a few weeks. I can honestly say that I am not happy with this new interface. The whole Metro style and tablet feel may work well if you are using oh I don’t know… a tablet. Not so well if you are at a desk. I can however envision this being useful in some scenarios….
Like say if you are at the command of a Galactic Destroyer where gravity isn’t going to cause your arms to fall off as you flap your hands around at 3D hologram screens while battling an alien overlord that is trying to take over Earth….
While you read this imagine yourself with no mouse or keyboard and instead of resting your arms on your armrests, your hands are extended out in front you for 8 hours…
Now of course you can still use a keyboard and a mouse, but it’s cludgy to move around. There are shortcuts and function keys you can use to do things, some navigation is actually faster once you learn all the shortcuts. Many things however you have to hover. I HATE being forced to hover. It just feels wrong. Like someone is sucking my life force out of me while I am forced to concentrate on doing absolutely nothing while I wait for some random timer to go off that allows me to do something ….
IMHO
On a Tablet? Yah sure, why not.
On a Desktop? Default theme with an Optional Traditional Setup Theme.
On a Server? I guess maybe as an optional theme at install time, but disabled and not installed default.
I want my my start button back...
Yes, I know I can use Powershell or I can even choose to have no graphical UI. Heck I do this all the time on my Linux servers. Powershell just doesn't feel so powerful and part of the reason why people install Windows is to have things to click on. Windows is supposed to make things easy. This new UI just doesn't do it for me.
I think this is a very a bold move by Microsoft, clearly pointed at Apple to try and have people interact with the screen in a more personal level. However this move does not seem to be one that is not well accepted thus far by the community.
What say you???

Didn't you hear about the Galactic Destroyer in Area 51?

I tried to float a weather balloon over area 51 to take pictures of it but it got shot down before I could retrieve it...
